SourceForge.net: KeePass 1.04 released

SourceForge.net: KeePass 1.04 released

Version 1.04 is mainly a feature release. The auto-type features have been enhanced (most notably there’s now an entry selection dialog displayed when multiple entries match), improved TAN handling (new display, support of indexed TANs, …) and the user interface has been improved.

I have been using this program for about a year since I have so many passwords to keep track of. This entry selection dialog is an improvement I can really use and appreciate. I have several entries for EFTPS and Ohio Business Gateway for which I previously could not use the auto-type feature. This feature saves me from a couple of copy and paste key strokes. It is not a big deal but it was annoying/inconvenient.

RE: WordPress 2

The WordPress community is very proud to present the next generation of WordPress to the world, our 2.0 “Duke” release, named in honor of jazz pianist and composer Duke Ellington. We’ve been working long and hard to bring you this release, and I hope you enjoy using it as much as we’e enjoyed working on it. In this release we’ve focused a tremendous amount on what we believe to be the core of blogging — the writing interface. Before you upgrade from an earlier version, remember that this is a major release and thousands of lines of code have changed. Before upgrading it’s always good, just in case, to make a backup of your database and WordPress files. It only takes a few minutes and gives you a total safety net if for whatever reason things don’t work. It is also probably a good idea to turn off your plugins, and activate them one-by-one after you’ve upgraded. Without further ado, you can download WordPress 2 right now. Read on for more information about what we think you’ll love about Duke.

Okay, the official version is out. I did find any problems with the RC3 version so its time for me to start updating my blogs.

Sharepoint SP2 – revisited

E-Bitz – SBS MVP the Official Blog of the SBS “Diva” : Sharepoint SP2 – revisited

Bottom line, unless EXPLICITLY stated in the KB that it ‘can’t’ go on SBS, it’s approved on our boxes.

I had just finished listening to the SBS Show podcast about patching when I decided to go and check my server. Although WSUS does a nice job I don’t really trust it yet. My way of checking on WSUS is by running Microsoft Update. My checks on workstations have confirmed that WSUS is working properly. When I ran Microsoft Update on my server it said that I needed to apply the IMF update and the Sharepoint SP2. WSUS did not tell me that. That’s when I remembered that I expected the Sharepoint SP2 update to appear on WSUS. I was hoping that I could count on WSUS blessing some of these updates as suitable for SBS. Although it never appeared on my WSUS, Susan(aka the SBS Pope) says I can do it without problems. So I went ahead and updated my server. The IMF story is different. I do not think that it will show up in WSUS. A week ago I had modified the registry per Microsoft’s instructions to allow automatic updates for IMF. Over a week has passed but nothing has happened. So I went ahead and updated IMF manually. I will check on it later.

SBS Show podcasts

For Christmas I got an inexpensive mp3 player, Creative Muvo. It only has 256MB but that is plenty for me. My first task for the mp3 player is to help me catch up on the SBS Show Podcasts. The podcasts are geared to SBS professionals and admins. I could listen to the podcasts on my computer but my computer is a little underpowered to play the podcast and do real work. The mp3 player also allows me to move around and if necessary go into a quieter room. I have listened to the first four podcasts and they have been both entertaining and informative. The podcasts on disaster recovery have been very good at reminding me to brush up on my disaster recovery plan and to look at incorporating a few of their tricks of the trade. Nice job, Vlade!

RE: Summary of Quickbook problems

I copied this from the SmallbizIT newsgroup so I could find this easier. This summarizes a lot of what’s been going on with the latest version of QuickBooks. Enjoy! 😉

Summary of Quickbook problems

The following is information I have from various sources on some problems with the Quickbook programs.

Where I have comments from others on where they got the information or if they had the problem themselves I have mentioned.

I encourage anyone that has more up-to-date information or some correction to anything I have said to let me know.

I have not as of yet installed any 2006 Quickbook programs so I personnally have not had any of these problems except one that concerns needing Administrator rights in order to run the program. This issue has been a ongoing issue with Quickbook programs.

So in no particular order are the issues I am aware of:

  1. Quickbooks 2006 crashes the computer – At time of installation of Quickbooks 2006 the computer crashes. Currently we do not know why a particular computer (Intuit may know but I have not heard) will crash while other computers will not crash. It appears that the errors are based on problems when the program is making changes to the computer Windows registry. If someone wishes to install 2006 for any reason they should do a complete backup of any computer in which they wish to install QB2006 and do it prior to doing the install so that they will not lose any data or files on that computer if it should crash. I have heard that some recommend that just a full backup of the registry will allow a restore of the computer. This backup of the registry is not creating a restore point in Windows but doing an actual backup of the complete registry. It appears that the computers are crashing when QB2006 is installed so once you are installed and you can still use the computer then you are past this issue. I suggest you read further on other issues once it is installed.History of identifing the problem – In a email forward to me on Dec 6, 2005 and the email started from ADP (the payroll service used by Microsoft for SBA) stated “I wanted to relay a message regarding QuickBooks 2006. An accountant in San Diego had a client purchase the QuickBooks 2006 version and unfortunately discovered that there is a dangerous glitch in the software. This version crashed the client’s computer and was unable to get any files off the computer. The accountant called Intuit and the President of Intuit said that there have been close to 1000 computers crash, but Intuit still hasn’t taken the software off of the shelves.” Comments made by others that the sender was a reason not to consider this a valid statement but now it does appear to be a valid problem. On Dec 7 2005 I received this from Larry Hess, CPA of Albuquerque, NM and he states, “… I have been able to confirm with someone inside Intuit that the problem does in fact exist. Oddly, it apparently didn’t appear during the beta test phase. And, if it doesn’t happen upon the inital installation of QB2006, it won’t. The best advice to someone whose installation has failed and rendered their computer virtually useless, is to call QB support, who are familiar with the problem. Makesure the call is escalated to tier 2 or tier 3 support, although that should happen automatically. As of now, there isn’t a fix; and, maybe not even an understanding of the cause of the problem. I understand that Intuit has taken some fairly extreme measures to help affected customers recover from it.” Also in a second email that same day he further adds, “I can add that they said the problem messes up the registry not the hard drive or files other than the registry. One rescue approach apparently can involve lengthy editing of the registry. So, I think a bootable copy or mirror of the entire hard drive prior to installation of QB2006 would be the best insurance. By the way, if any beta testers are reading, so far no beta testers haveencountered the problem when installing the production release.”

On Dec 8 2005 Larry Hess, CPA further reports, “For those who are wondering whether or not to install QB2006, one further piece of advice:
Make a backup of the full registry (better than setting a restore point in XP) before installing QB2006. If the install causes Windows to go bad, Intuit Support can easily (they say) help you recover.”

  2. Quickbook needs local workstation Administrator rights in order to run. – Currrently Intuit says that this will be changed in the 2007 program. This issue is an ongoing security issue as malware can install programs on that computer. The Administrator rights I am talking about is the Windows user needing Administrator rights. The user of the Quickbooks and from inside the program may not be an administrator but to get into Quickbooks that person needs to have Windows Administrator rights.History – SANS NewsBites – Vol: 7, Issue: 59In response to Newsbites’ recognition, Brad Smith, senior vice president of QuickBooks, confirmed on December 2, 2005 that this problem will be fixed in the next major release (QuickBooks 2007), scheduled for delivery within 12 months. One of the main issues with needing Admin rights is that “You are administrator on your machine and that means that malware can easily get in too. Jesper’s Blog : Malware and administrative rights
  3. Multi-user Mode Quickbooks 2006 – Problems this year for multi-user use of the program. It is recommended the program be installed on the server. For a good article on installing Quickbooks 2006 for multi-use see http://www.cpa911.com/installqb2006.pdfHistory – From a Tech listserve one of techie posted on Dec 7 2005 that “… QuickBooks 2006 will not switch to multi user like previous versions. I have found out I have two choices; first to installQuickBooks 2006 on the SBS2K3 server or second it has a new alternate mode a workstation needs to start up switch to multi user mode then remain logged on until the other workstations running QuickBooks 2006 are finished. The alternate multi user mode is a pain, but workable.” and then later he further posts that “It is the premier edition. I called QB tech support and the ‘script’ also said to install it on the server. Also this version is running much slower than previous versions. Especially in single user mode.” Then the next day this individual posted that “I just finished a support call to my client that is having QuickBooks 2006 problems that I wrote about on the SBS list Wednesday. I did not install QuickBooks on the SBS server, but the data files are located in a server network share. The interesting thing now is that when my client is using QuickBooks 2006 in the back office it is taking down their Retailer POS terminals.” He began considering reinstalling a earlier version of Quickbooks becauses of the problems. But another individual posts that “The 2006 is a brand new Sybase SQLanywhere database version and it’s not roll-back-able.”

Later another techie responds “I had a client with the same issue, she worked with Intuit for 2 days to get the alternate method to work but could not and they said she would have to put it on the server. I advised that as it is a new version and untested that I did not recommend it and could not guarantee that it would not cause issue.” Another posting by a techie was, “I could not agree more. This is not Enterprise, but Premier. I hate telling the client that every time they use this software in multi user mode they have to start it on one workstation switch to multi user mode then make sure to not log off that workstation until the other users are finished with the day. I see all kinds of issues. I would recommend to roll back to 2005 but the data is in 2006 format and that would mean reentering the data.”

It was posted that you can read more on this problem at:

QuickBooks Forums – Avoid QB 2006 network install

To read a article on how to install see
    http://www.cpa911.com/installqb2006.pdf.

  4. Further it was stated, “Do watch out for the network install… it’s like SBA (Microsoft Small Business Accounting) and has to be installed ‘on’ the server now.”On Dec 19 2005 these comments were made that state, “I had my first install of qb2006 last week onto a SBS2003 box. I could no get the remote computers to open the company file on the server unless the server actually had quickbooks running with the file open, from reading the docs it seems like that should not be required, anybody else run into this problem, the error I was getting was that the file on the server could not be opened, to try and open the file on the server and try again. with the qb open and running the file on the server it works fine on the remote computers.” Another techie points out to solve the problem he stated, “The fix is to give the quickbooks service account full control of the directory where the quickbooks data is residing. Also, the quickbooks sevice account should be excluded from the password policy. The account should be set to ‘password never expires”. After you make the rights assignment you will need to stop and restart the quickbooks service.”

This is another security problem for any computer running that way. It was stated that, “Gawd bless it…this is worse than local admin rights in my book now that they are having me hack up my server rights.” She further states, “When Accounting software is requiring this to be shared out on a network….quite frankly I’m getting a bit embarrassed by the lack of security planning and coding in our accounting applications. Is everyone aware that SANS listed Quickbooks as their first ever inductee into the Local Admin hall of shame?”

  5. ERROR: Connection Has Been Lost [99937] – When connecting to the company data file. As you may know, QuickBooks 2006 and Enterprise 6.0 are using a new network based database. This means that the programs rely heavily upon network connectivity to access the QuickBooks company file and to provide Multi-User access. Error 99937 is a generic error that will occur if the connection to the company file has been lost.SOLUTION #1: Restart QuickBooksIf this is the first time you have seen the error after connecting successfully in the past, restart the computer where the data file is stored and re-open the QuickBooks company file on each of the other computers. This will resolve most temporary network issues.

SOLUTION #2: (Most Common) Configure QuickBooks 2006 for Multi-User Access

SOLUTION #3: For more information on resolving this issue

    Possible Causes include:

    – The network connection to the host computer was interrupted. (For example if the host computer has been shut down for the day.)
    – The QuickBooks database manager (QBDBMGRN.EXE) on the host computer was unexpectedly terminated.
    – The QBDataServiceUser on the host computer does not have sufficient permissions to the folder where the company file is located. This is the user created by QuickBooks during installation that allows the program to successfully connect to the data file over the network.

History – This is the broadcast email QB put out last week to alert proadvisers of this problem. Audience Affected: Some ProAdvisors and clients installing QuickBooks 2006 and experiencing “Error 99937” or “Error 1911” Action: Follow important steps outlined. A very small number of customers installing QuickBooks 2006 and Enterprise 6.0 have experienced a few issues of which you should be aware.

  6. ERROR 1911 – Error 1911 during installation (or Desktop icons turning white or missing after installing QuickBooks 2006/Enterprise 6.0)This issue is extremely rare, and it appears to be caused when program associations within the operating system are lost. This may be caused by viruses, corrupt files, or failing hardware. We are actively investigating at this time.If you experience this issue, where you get white or missing icons on your desktop, please do the following:

    — don’t go past this point, and stop installation immediately
    — run a virus scan
    — contact technical support immediately at 888-333-3451

History – this is from the same QB broadcase email as mentioned under item 4 above.

    Conclusion

So it appears that the 2006 version of Quickbooks has several installation and running problems that users of Quickbooks should be aware of before upgrading and installing this latest version.

Some have said they do not recommend that their clients upgrade to 2006.

For the professionals we may not recommend to our clients to upgrade but if any one client does then you will be forced into upgrading just to be able to support that client.

Depending on these problems it is a question if Intuit can issue a “fix” for 2006 to solve these problems.

So buyer beware and to be safe professionals may wish to consider not recommending their clients upgrade.

Of course another solution is to see if the Microsoft SBA (Small Business Accounting) will meet their needs. (P.S. I have no relationship with MS other than having their programs – I get nothing for people buying or switching their programs.)

    So have a nice day.

    Jim

Filing the 990

Welcome to efile.form990.org

The 990 Online, developed by the nonprofit Urban Institute, provides nonprofit organizations with a simple and completely free way to prepare their returns and electronically file them with the IRS.

This is my second year using efile.form990.org to file the 990 return. It took me about four hours to enter, find the additional information, and make the corrections. Most of the data comes directly off of the Income and Expense Statement, the Statement of Financial Position, and last year’s 990. This year I used two templates to upload data into the return.

Upgrading the memory on my SBS server

Well, I finally added some more memory on my SBS server. I was running it at 576 Mb. Now it has 1024 Mb. I have not noticed any obvious improvements like when I added the second processor. I do not expect to see any visible differences since it has such a small load and paging was not very visible. It looks like sqlserver liked the memory upgrade the most. I opted for the memory upgrade since Crucial has 10% discount during December and the memory had been already marked down. I thought I would get it now before it was discontinued. Obviously I do not need a bigger server for what I am running and the additional memory should make my wait for the bigger server more tolerable.

Yahoo Mail Beta

The folks at Yahoo asked me to try their Mail Beta. I have been hearing about it for some time so I was curious. I was curious but unwilling to go check it out. The beta must be getting close to being over since they invited me. I have been routing all of my personal mail, newsletters, and non-profit email through Yahoo for a long time. It is the bulk of my email. The fact that they do a pretty good job at virus checking and identifying spam has been a big plus. I have a variety of ways of viewing to my Yahoo mail in addition to the web interface. Recently I have been using Desktop Sidebar for browsing and deleting mail. Desktop Sidebar has a couple of limitations that has forced me to go to the web interface so the beta is a good option for me. So far it looks real nice.

Firewall Dashboard

Scorpion Software Corp. Firewall Dashboard

I read in various blogs about the Firewall Dashboard Beta from Scorpion Software so I decided to give it a try. I initially did not get it to install. The installation procedure was upset that it could not find a MSDE instance on my C drive. My system boots off of an old Promise ATA RAID drive and it came up as my D drive when I set it up initially. So I sent the folks at Scorpion Software an email. They were not going to get around to fixing this problem for awhile so they recommended a registry hack to fake out the installation procedure. That kind of worked but only got me by the first error message. The second error message complained about not finding osql.exe on my C drive. So I copied the directory containing osql.exe over to my C drive and re-ran the installation procedure. The installation worked and now I am getting daily reports. The reports are cool. Outside of my son’s laptop my server is getting very few attacks. That’s nice to know. The report showed that most of my attacks are coming from my son’s PC via Netbios. So I now know I need to disable Netbios over TCP on my son’s wireless connection. I am not sure how much the Firewall Dashboard will cost but it is pretty slick and simple way to check out your internet connection for attacks and misconfigured components.

Meinberg NTP Download- Updated Again!

I reinstalled NTP again! Recently I rebooted my server after applying some patches and during the startup I got a message saying that NTP could not be started. After researching the message I found that the ntp daemon was gone. So I uninstalled and reinstalled NTP. Hopefully this will not occur again!

Meinberg NTP Download- Updated

Meinberg NTP Download

I updated my NTP and NTP Monitor on my SBS server. At pretty random intervals the NTP daemon would crash. I was getting a pretty long run in most cases. I investigating the problem but I did not come up with any conclusions. I did notice that NTP did not run crash if I was not running the NTP monitor. So I reinstalled. The NTP monitor is a newer version while the NTP daemon is an older version(4.2a versus 4.2b). Otherwise everything works as expected.

Updated Sharepoint intranet site

MVHFH Intranet Sharepoint SiteI have a new sharepoint site on my intranet server, Millcreek Valley HFH Board of Directors. I am the treasurer for a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate so I have a fair amount of documents to keep track of. My original site was getting a little disorganized so I decided to reorganize the site and apply a new theme. So I created a new site using the Board of Directors theme. Then I modified the web page using FrontPage to have a different picture and logo. While I was at it, I did a little more sharepoint cusomization.

  1. I downloaded the links into a spreadsheet and updated the links from a csv file of links that I have.
  2. I created a picture library and added some recent photos.
  3. I loaded and updated the contacts for the board of directors.
  4. I created a document library for my files.
  5. I put my monthly and annual reports and our financial policies into the Finance document library and my accounting spreadsheets and bank statements into the Accounting document library.

I must admit that the site looks pretty cute for just a couple of hours work.

Updated RSSBandit and Notepad++

Over the last couple of weeks I have updated both RSSBandit and Notepad++. They are some of my favorite open source utilities. Most of the changes in the programs are not significant for me but I like to keep at the more recent stable version. I run RSSBandit almost all day. When I have some spare time I will catch up on the news available via RSS. The only feature I might use is the NNTP news reader. Notepad++ is a lean, quick, full featured editor that puts Notepad to shame. I have no issues with installing it on virgin Microsoft installations.

Firefox 1.5

Firefox – Rediscover the web

Firefox 1.5 is now available. It caught me at a good time so I went ahead and downloaded it. I was pretty confident that it would be stable. I cannot say it offers me anything over the previous version. I use Firefox as my main browser since I like tabbed browsing, it appears to be quicker than IE, and it is more stable than IE.

RE: Format Comparison Between ODF and MS XML ~ by Carrera, D’Arcus, Eisenberg

Alex Hudson, J. David Eisenberg, Bruce D’Arcus and Daniel Carrera of the OpenDocument Fellowship have provide this article for us, comparing OpenDocument Format and Microsoft’s new MS XML format technically, not legally. Groklaw will be doing that separately, but this article addresses interoperability. That is the point of XML, after all, is it not?

[Via GrokLaw]

I couldn’t help but conclude that ODF is much easier to read and convert to XHTML than Microsoft’s format. The problem with this analysis is what does this have to do with print format compatibility. For me that is the bottom line. The closer ODF is to HTML the more difficult I think it will be to achieve an acceptable level of print format compatibility with existing documents in MS Word that are not in HTML format. Many documents convert to HTML without problems. Some documents do not convert very well. Tweaking documents to fix minor formatting problems can be a very time consuming task. You start off trying to change one little thing. The rationale is that it is a simple change and it will be a quick fix. The next thing you know you have blown an hour or more trying to do one little thing and you are calling tech support for help. Oh well!

RE: Mini Opera Browser For The Blackberry

Opera Mini is the mobile version of the popular Opera web browser, which is available for many mobile devices including the Blackberry handhelds. What’s great about Opera Mini is that it uses an inbetween proxy server that strips and formats the regular website, optimizing it for mobile platforms which makes browsing faster and saves on data cost. It has all the regular features expected of a browser, such as bookmarks, browsing history, and ability to split large pages into smaller sections for faster browsing.

Best of all, Opera Mini is free.

To download visit the following site on your Blackberry:

http://mini.opera.com

* Note, users running 4.0+ will have issues installing Opera Mini for the Blackberry, you will get a JAD error. What you need to do is find the link for the ‘Low memory version’ and install that version. We have already contacted Opera regarding this error.

[Via BlackBerry Cool]

The good news is that the browser is real nice and free. The bad news is that it is so slow I have already removed it from my phone! Other people have already commented on the slowness problem on their phones. I had to put wap.voicestream.com in my TCP configuration and download the low memory version to get around the “907 invalid jar” error message. This is a much nicer browser than the built-in browser but on my Blackberry this browser appears to be a work in progress.

Forcing Logoff

In a previous post I thought I had arranged the system to force my son off the computer at 11 o’clock. The problem was that he was playing video games and not doing his homework. Being a smart kid he figured out that he could change the time or time zone and continue to play. I vowed to get back to this problem when I had more time. Today was the day I think I finally fixed his wagon. I got lured into researching this problem when I noticed about twenty audit failures with an ID of 537 in the daily log. A little research showed that my son’s PC was causing the problems. The reason was due to a lack of time synchronization between the domain controller and the workstation. He was changing the time and the workstation’s time was wrong. So I did a little more research and found out I could assign the privelege of changing system time(Windows Settings-Security Settings-Local Policies-User Rights Assignment). To make this work I used the Domain Admins group rather than the Adminstrators group. My son was a member of the Administrators group on his local workstation. To reinforce my point to my son, I modified the GPO to force logoff when his logon time expires. There are still several easy ways to get around these restrictions, such as, playing the games on his laptop but this has its risks and downfalls, too. At least once a quarter he has to get his laptop rebuilt since his laptop has gotten completely mucked up. All of the non-school stuff disappears. My hope is that he will decide that trying to get around these boundaries is too much like work.

Meinberg NTP Download

Meinberg NTP Download

Additionally for the operating systems Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 Server there is a NTP Time Server Monitor available, which let the user configure and control the local NTP service over a comfortable graphical user interface. Secondary the current status of the local NTP service, as well as external NTP services, can be displayed.

In previous searches about NTP I found this site. Today I decided to try out their Win32 port of NTP and the NTP GUI, NTP Time Server Monitor. The installation turned off W32Time service. That is okay since that service would be redundant. I like the graphical monitor since I found the only way to figure out your W32Time status was to search the event file. So far everything works as expected although some menus appear in german and their isn’t a help file. It is a beta but it looks pretty solid.

Linux and ISA2004

I have a special ISA2004 firewall policy rule for my linux box and another for the BitTorrent listener. The first rule allows anonymous access selected protocols for the specified host, my linux box. The anonymous access door is open on my ISA2004 firewall but not to wide. Since I want the linux box to be a full BitTorrent client I created a web publishing rule for a port in the 49152-65535 range as recommended here. For a variety of reasons I assigned a static IP address to the linux box. The rule allows the following protocols:

  1. BitTorrent(TCP 6868 Outbound, 6881-6882 primary Outbound and secondary inbound)
  2. BitTorrent Server(TCP 49999 Primary Inbound and secondary Outbound, UDP 49999 primary Receive Send and secondary Send Receive)
  3. FTP
  4. HTTP
  5. HTTPS
  6. NTP(UDP)

After monitoring the startup and download of a torrent with the monitoring feature of ISA2004, I think I have the rules set up correctly. My download speed runs at max download speed. I found Firestarter to be a really nice gui for linux firewall side. It is pretty simple to use and has some monitoring capability. If you have Fedora you can install it using YUM from the Extras repository. I have port 6868 in the rule since that is the port Azureus uses to check for azureus.aelitis.com for updates. Adding it to the rule sped up the Azureus startup. I have 6882 in the range even though technically Azureus should not use it. My ISA2004 firewall says Azureus at least tries to use it.
